
Career
Mitchell (Mitch) D. McKay was elected to the City of Imperial Beach City Council at the November 8, 2022, Municipal Election, representing District 3. On August 6, 2025, the majority of the City Council voted to appoint Mitchell D. McKay as the Mayor, and he received his Oath of Office August 20, 2025, to serve out the remainder of the former Mayor's term of office through November 2026.
He worked for 35 years in local Aerospace Industry with General Dynamics and Rohr, Inc. and later retired from United Technologies Corporation (UTC) as a Senior Aftermarket Technical Services Project Engineer.
His community involvement includes serving on the City of Imperial Beach Design Review Board, the Imperial Beach Little League Board of Directors, as well as the City’s Sediment Management Working group. He also took part in the Paint IB Community Group and has volunteered at the Kids Fishing Derby. Most recently, Councilmember McKay served a 3-year appointment to the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission (IBWC) Citizen Forum Board.
Mayor McKay currently serves the South Bay Mayors & City Managers Committee, Metro Wastewater Commission JPA (primary), Cal Cities San Diego Division and Legislative Sub-Committee (primary), Cal-Cities Coastal Cities Interest Group (primary), Chamber of Commerce Liaison (primary), and South County Economic Development Council (primary). In addition to the primary City Council representation assignments, he serves as alternate to the San Diego Association of Government (SANDAG) Board, Metropolitan Transit System Board, San Diego Community Power JPA (alternate).
History
Mitch grew up in Imperial Beach and graduated from Mar Vista High School.
Personal Life
Mitch was born in Alameda, California, as the second born of five children. In his spare time, he and his wife Suzanne like to restore 1960’s Fords, including his own 1965 Ranchero and visit their 3 grandchildren.
