Like many coastal communities, the City of Imperial Beach is facing an increased risk of storms, flooding, and erosion due to sea-level rise. To better understand the risks to the community, the City of Imperial Beach Sea Level Rise Assessment was produced in 2016. A resilient Imperial Beach requires that we prepare the community to avoid damage and/ or recover from these potential future risks.
To build a resilient community, the City seeks to balance the preservation and enhancement of public access, recreation, and natural habitats with the need to maintain public infrastructure, businesses, and homes through an integrated planning effort. To that end, the City is in the process of updating its General Plan/Local Coastal Program (GP/LCP), and adopted a Climate Action Plan (CAP). The plans will be prepared in a manner that respects the City’s unique qualities and characteristics, reflects local preferences and objectives, and aligns with and implement the City’s long-term vision and values. The overall goal of the project is to improve resiliency while meeting California’s general plan and local coastal program planning requirements.
